JLPFI Welcomes Longer Days to TRAIN!

JLPFI welcomes each of you to our March newsletter! February was another busy month to teach defensive mindsets and program muscle memories! Our training venue continues to educate new shooters, new concealed carry applicants and concealed carry renewal applicants. The commitments to continued training from our clients has been notable with new members of JLPFI!
A big Thank You to Mr. Bob Moore who is the Concealed Weapons Coordinator for the Fresno County Sheriffs Department. Bob provided an exceptional presentation on the process of applying for your concealed weapons permit at Turner's Outdoorsman-Fresno on February 11th. We hope to provide more public forums in the coming months regarding concealed carry subjects.
March is the perfect month to make time for a training session with JLPFI as more daylight can guide your way to accuracy on your target! We train in all environments to prepare ourselves for what might be ahead.
Consider taking a refresher course on the basics, or jump into an advanced course with all the extras of movement, multiple targets and unexpected malfunctions of your weapon provided by JLPFI!
No matter what course you choose, the benefits and summary of target results will produce the confidence you need to be safe in your everyday carry methods.
And don't forget to shop at our local favorite gun stores like Turners Outdoorsman-Fresno and Halfcocked Gunsmithing in Clovis for all of your shooting accessories and ammunition needs.
JLPFI encourages each of you to "Spring into Action" and give us a call for your next training session or concealed carry renewal course.
JLPFI is blessed to call Sun Mountain Gun Club our "Home Range"!

Commit to EDC- Everyday Carry!
JLPFI asks each and every concealed carry client how often they are actually carrying their weapon. The honest answer is that many choose not to carry due to the hassle of gun free zones they must visit on a daily basis including many places of employment. Many also say they have yet to discover a comfortable way to carry the weapon without the fear of it being seen. Then there are a chosen few that are licensed to conceal carry that have not yet committed to the defensive mindset required to defend if they must or they simply lack the confidence to conceal carry their weapon.
For those of you that have committed to carry as often as you can, JLPFI applauds your efforts and encourages you to keep it up!
For the others who might fall into one of the above categories, please consider these facts:
It is the one day you are not carrying when you will need it the most!

Gun Free Zones are the unfortunate reality of workplaces and so many other places in your daily routine. California keeps adding more zones that we must abide by or choose not to go to these prohibited zones.
Equipment research and trial periods are a real good way for you to find what works best! There is no perfect holster for everyone. Take the time to research your options by going to your local gun shop and test drive the merchandise! Include the mirror check to make sure the weapon is undetectable. A weapons-specific fitted, comfortable holster is the goal! You can call our favorite veteran owned holster maker, Mr. Ben Barcus who locally custom manufactures kydex inside and outside the waistband holsters.
Ben's business phone # is (559) 232-7087.

For those of you that are challenged to adopt the defensive mindset, your best option is to sign up for a local ride-along with Fresno PD or the Fresno Sheriffs Department. The experience of a ride-along usually will motivate anyone licensed to carry, to carry more often. The "window" of our city and county awaits for you to witness the dangers that are in every part of our environment. After that experience, give JLPFI a call and let us know that you want to commit to carrying much more often! We will gladly provide you with the "confidence in carry" training you seek. You will ultimately adopt that defensive mindset to carry you through the day that hopefully never comes.

Is the City of Fresno Public Safety in Jeopardy?

Fresno City Council will only partially fund new police weapons.
There were angry exchanges at City Hall on Thursday after the Fresno City Council decided to not fully fund new police weapons.

The aging service weapons were being refurbished to try to save money, but they were coming back from the manufacturer defective.

The meeting became heated after several confrontational questions were asked of the police chief.

The council decided to fund one-third of the cost for new guns. Chief Andy Hall will have to come up with the rest of the money in his budget.

Hall explained his message to the Fresno City Council as simply and easily as he could.

"A gun that may fire today may not fire tomorrow. And that's the concern, it'd be like driving a car that may not have brakes tomorrow," he said.

One councilmember asked all the questions.

"Is there currently an emergency? What's the current reality when it comes to service weapons? Do officers have service weapons that don't work on the field now?" asked Fresno City Council President Miguel Arias.

"We have weapons that are beginning to malfunction and they have malfunctioned during range qualifications," Hall answered.

Hall said the police department tried to save money by refurbishing about 900 guns that are at the end of the manufacturer's recommended shelf life. But after several hundred were returned, they had other problems - including firing.

Arias said the city has invested in the police department more than any other city department, shelling out over half of the city's general fund for police staffing, services, and equipment.

"Here we're still trying to get light bulbs replaced after ten years. It's a fair point to say you need more resources and so does everyone else," he said.

The chief was asked everything, from how many new police cars have arrived since the city added $5 million to their budget, to the cost of recent police officer raises.

"With that, I'd like to point out that I'm supportive of - thank you police chief," said Arias during one exchange.
Hall responded: "Council, can I respond to that?"
"No but thank you," replied Arias.

Arias' comments and cutting off the police chief had Fresno Police Officer's Association President Todd Fraizer fuming.

"I stormed out of there, I was so mad," Frazier said.

But Chief Hall didn't sit down. He told the council the police department is reminded every day that money is tight.

"We have carpet that's over 40 years old. We have cars that have hundreds of thousands of miles. We fly 15-year-old helicopters," he said.

Fraizer said the message the council is ultimately sending to officers is that their safety isn't that important.

"We got a problem here and this doesn't sit well or bode well for recruiting and retaining more officers if they know they can't depend on their city to take care of them when they need them."

The total cost of the guns is over $300,000, so city staff must find an additional $217,000 somewhere within the police department.

JLPFI recently attended a neighborhood watch meeting at a local police precinct. This subject came up in the meeting. One of the neighbors asked "Does this mean we are on our own now"?
And yet another reason for those that choose not to carry should carry more often and those considering applying for a CCW should no longer wait to do it!
Have a great month and see you at the range!
